WHEN Belstone visited Spreyton last Thursday in the Buckley Cup bowlers were on top to such an extent that extras were the top score in both innings.

Queenslander Evans generated a lively pace at the start of the Belstone innings, accounting for both openers in a spell of four overs for seven runs. In fact Evans, Montgomery and Smith bowled a total of ten overs, taking four wickets for only 14 runs.

Fortunately for Belstone runs did come at the other end as several batsmen got a start, leading to a 20-over total of 92 for seven.

In reply, Spreyton were completely tied down by an accurate Belstone attack, supported by sharp fielding, and at one time were 19 for nine before struggling to one batting point (for 25 runs) and a total of 34 for nine.

Best of the bowlers were the pace of young Robert Hall (4-4) and the spin of Terry Jeal (3-2).

Belstone suffered a heavy defeat against Newton Abbot Post Office in the South Devon League last Sunday. They struggled to 106 all out in 29 overs with only Eddie Jones (23) and Fraser Willis, who came in at number four and was last out for a defiant 37, reaching double figures. Newton Abbot reached their target for the loss of only two wickets, Fletcher top scoring with 48.

The following day tourists Ashtead visited Rew Meadow. They were soon in trouble at 34 for five with Greg Cornish and Eddie Jones in particular extracting some bounce and movement from the wicket.

A dramatic recovery ensued as Leonard (42), Mildner (56) and especially Chris Douglas, with a powerful innings of 81, transformed the score, adding 205 for the next two wickets.

All the Belstonians got a start and for much of the innings they were in touch with the six an over asking rate. Ashtead nominated 'man-of-the-opposition' Cornish completed a fine all-round performance with 49 runs, Jones likewise with 40, before the reply eventually fell short at 185 for five.

Plenty more cricket this week. On Sunday Exeter St James come to Rew Meadow in the League and on Wednesday July 31 Belstone visit Tedburn St Mary in the evening Buckley Cup.

Top fixture of the week though will be the President's match, starting at 2pm. this Saturday followed in the evening by a supper and ball in the village hall.
