CHAGFORD bell ringers are celebrating a superb first place in a competition held at Sampford Courtenay recently.

The group was competing in the annual Okehampton Deanery Ringing Competition, which includes ringers from South and North Tawton and Sampford Courtenay.

Chagford ringers joined the Okehampton Deanery Ringing Association in 1975 and at that time, first and second places in the annual competition always went to North or South Tawton.

Chagford have been placed second four times now but this year proved to be a golden year, when the A and B teams gained first and second place respectively.

All the members including bell captain Julia Endacott say they are delighted to be bringing the coveted shield to Chagford for the first time.

The results of the main competition were 1 Chagford A; 2 Chagford B; 3 South Tawton; 4 North Tawton A; 5 Sampford Courtenay A; 6 North Tawton B; 7 Sampford Courtenay B.

Intermediate section: 1 Okehampton; 2 Spreyton; 3 Sampford Courtenay; 4 Chagford; 5 Gidleigh.

Novice section: 1 Chagford; 2 Spreyton; 3 Gidleigh.
