I HAVE been asked by the Rotary Club of Okehampton to express the thanks of the club for the support given by the people of Okehampton and visitors who came to Simmons Park on Sunday August 5 to enjoy the very belated May Fair.

Although the day threatened rain and there were many other attractions on offer, their support meant the club raised a total of £1,675 to be divided between Rotary charities locally and the proposed hospital.

Particular thanks go to the mayor of Okehampton who kindly declared the fair open, the sponsors of the duck races, to the operators of the various stalls and side-shows, and to the management of both Waitrose and Somerfields for allowing the sale of ducks prior to the races. All the ducks were bought and prizes ranging from £100 to £5 were issued for each race. Several kind winners gave their winnings back to the club, and to them grateful thanks are offered.

The members of the club thoroughly enjoyed themselves (especially those in the river!) and sincerely trust that everyone else did, too, after the restrictions of the past months. Next year the May Fair will be in its usual place in the calendar and the club looks forward to your continued help in raising money for charity. Please look out for the publicity in this newspaper, on the radio and posters around the town.

ON BEHALF of the Princetown Pre-school and Playgroup we would like to say thank you to everyone who supported our recent duck race at Postbridge.

Due to the excellent support of Princetown residents, and others,we were able to raise £350 to help towards the running costs of the pre-school. And our gratitude to the Wharf of Tavistock, Miniature Pony Centre of Moretonhampstead, Endsleigh Garden Centre, McDonalds, Tesco, the National Marine Aquarium, Wrigley's and Sparkwell Wildlife Park, who kindly donated prizes for some of the winning ducks, and to the funding provided by Devon Community Foundation towards the cost of the duck rental.

We would also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the Dartmoor Prison Officers' Social Club who have given us excellent support in our on-going fundraising efforts, and many children will definitely miss their regular and very entertaining discos.
