BECKIE Chapman, from Yelverton, has successfully completed the initial phase of officer training at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in her bid to become a warfare officer in the Royal Navy.

Beckie, 19, a former pupil of Plymouth College and the Defence 6th Form College, Welbeck, joined the Royal Navy in April 2009. The course at BRNC sets numerous challenges and there is significant emphasis on developing leadership skills throughout the training in addition to academic work. Ten weeks have been spent at sea in amphibious assault ship HMS Albion which was operating in UK waters. The time on board provided Beckie and her colleagues with an excellent opportunity to learn how a fully operational warship functions across all areas and specialisations.

The salute at the passing out parade was taken by Prince Edward in his capacity as honorary Commodore of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

Midshipman Chapman has remained at BRNC to carry out the initial warfare officers' course before further specific professional training at sea.
