AN analysis of crimes on Dartmoor and at beauty spots has led police to make recommendations to owners of vehicles. A spokesperson said they had put much effort into reducing vehicle crime. The items most favoured by criminals were mobile phones, cash, credit cards, laptops, satellite navigation equipment, car stereos and CD players. ?Many victims left valuables on show that tempted the criminal to break in, and this included loose change. Take all valuables with you where possible. If you have to leave anything in your car, make sure you leave it in the boot rather than on show,? he said. Six victims had thought their cars had locked and gone for a walk, not realising the vehicle was insecure. ?When locking your vehicle with a key or remote fob, aways check manually by trying the door handle. If left unlocked, not only does it make it easy for someone to steal from the car, but the car itself may be stolen,? he said. Other recommendations were to never leave loose change on display, take valuables with you, taken the front of the stereo/CD player with you, never leave vehicle documents in the car and to try to park in busy car parks rather than secluded areas. Free leaflets, called Moor Aware leaflets, stating that all valuables have been removed from your car are available at Tavistock and Okehampton police stations.
