PEOPLE from across West Devon are being given the chance to take part in a production depicting Beryl Cook's Plymouth.
Sailors and Sweethearts will be a production based on the stories and characters captured by Beryl Cook in her paintings, showing a cross section of the Plymouth community. It will be performed at the Drum Theatre in March 2013.
The People's Company production is based around the experiences of local people, so the company are keen to get local people to audition or apply to assist with the production. No previous experience is necessary, just commitment and enthusiasm.
Auditions are taking place on Tuesday, September 18, Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30. Anyone wishing to audition will need to be aged 18 or over and join the People's Company, which costs just £6 a year – members also get to hear about other community projects and receive theatre ticket offers.
The production will be the culmination of over a year's work, including months gathering people's stories of nights on the town. These experiences will all feed into an original play written by Nick Stimson.
Nick said: 'Beryl Cook painted Plymouth as only the people from Plymouth know it. She has long been someone whose work I've admired and who I feel opens doors to stories and characters.'
