A WEST Devon children's charity is appealing for volunteers to help their programme of activities this year.

CHICKS (Children's Holidays for Inner City Kids), based at Woodside Retreat near Milton Abbot, provides country breaks for disadvantaged children from all over the country.

The first group of youngsters arrived this week — part of a 29-week programme which can cater for up to 400 children.

Activities arranged for the holidays include horse riding, sailing, canoeing, archery, beach visits, climbing and abseiling. But the fun can only take place if there are enough volunteers.

No particular qualifications are necessary and age is no barrier — CHICKS have volunteers aged between 18 and 75! The only requirements are lots of energy and patience. All volunteers must be vetted by the Home Office prior to acceptance by CHICKS, to ensure children's safety.
