WEST Devon has this week joined those backing London?s bid to stage the Olympic Games in 2012. The borough council has written a letter of support to the organisers of the high profile bid as they held a major conference this week outlining the economic opportunities the event would bring. Economic leisure and community development committee chairman Cllr Nick Morgan, who represented Great Britain at the shot putt in the late 1950s and early 1960s, said the event would be particularly good for the borough?s tourism industry. ?We fully support London?s bid. It would be absolutely marvelous if such a prestigious event comes to the capital. ?The whole country would benefit if the Olympics is staged in London as it would bring a range of great opportunities for all.? From 1956-62, Cllr Morgan represented Great Britain and England in the shot putt. At one stage he was third best in the country but just missed out on attending the Olympic games in Rome in 1960 due to injury.
