A CAMPAIGN to reduce the speed limit through Sourton took a step forward this week when highways officials and the police agreed to look into the issue.

At the parish meeting on Monday night, which was attended by 24 concerned villagers, the police promised to set up equipment to test the speed of traffic and contact the speed enforcement officer to get traffic checks done more frequently.

It was also decided to talk to the road safety officer in a bid to review a West Devon partnership committee decision not to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph.

Secretary of Sourton Parish Council Michael Taylor said there was a strength of feeling in the parish about getting the speed limit reduced. Speed testing revealed anything from 44 to 63 miles an hour along the A386 stretch of road through Sourton village.

'There is no doubt that traffic travels too fast along this road, particularly in an area which has no pavements,' he said. 'Much of it is of the heavy goods vehicle variety but it is a very busy road for all traffic because it is the main north/south road through Devon.'

Campaigners would ideally like a 30mph limit to extend to Lake and Southerly.
