SUNDAY saw members of Bats (Bere Alston Trekkers) taking part in their first off-road race ? the Six Moor Miles. For seasoned hash and cross-country runners this race was a dream, but for those not used to the terrain it was somewhat different. The race, hosted by Plymouth Harriers, started on the moor at Yelverton and wound its way up, down and around the moor at Roborough Down. Runners had to negotiate slippery conditions and single track paths where there was a certain amount of friendly elbow jostling. Making her British debut for the club was Lauren Sargeant who more recently has been used to the sunny and flatter routes in Australia. There were four placings for the Bats at this new race, Mary Sargeant who was first in her age group, Laurence Sargeant, Sue Collins and Dotty Allan were all third in their age groups. Bats thanked Plymouth Harriers for a well organised and marshalled race and we look forward to running again next year. l Bats are pictured (left to right): (back) Laurence Sargeant 0:50:28; Sue Catto: 1:27:06; Allan Catto 1:06:34; (middle) Lauren Sargeant 1:03:10; Mary Sargeant 1:01:47; Dotty Allan 1:00:24; Jane Page 1:04:06; Mary Kelly 1:10:26; Sue Collins 1:02:23; (front) Barbara Osborne 1:09:52; Kathy Williams 1:03:08 and Julie Page 1:09:16.
