BATs A team find themselves joint top of division two of the Plymouth and District Badminton League after their second match of the 2008 – 2009 season.

The A team's first home match saw them take on the experienced Devonshire B team.

In the men's doubles rubbers Jon Freeman and Alan Berry opened the BAT's account for the evening with a convincing 21-15, 21- 5 rubber win over the visitors.

The second men's doubles rubber saw Paul Bitton partner Jon and continue the positive start by taking the rubber 21-16, 21-15.

With two rubbers in the bag Paul and Alan took the to the court for the third rubber. The pair lost a scrappy first game, 18 – 21 and then continued to play in the same vein in the second game. Just as it looked like a first defeat of the season for the pair they came back to level the second game 20 all and then take the next two points.

At one game all the BATs pairs began to play sensible badminton and they showed their composure by taking the third game and the rubber 21-13.

All three ladies rubbers went the way of Devonshire with all three BATs ladies finding the experienced Devonshire ladies too much to handle.

Despite playing well at times Abi Maunder, Rachael Williams and Frankie Morton always found that the consistency that they needed to win a rubber eluded them.

With the three mixed doubles still to play the overall score was three all and with everything to play for the BATs ladies were determined to come away with something from the evening.

The first mixed doubles rubber saw Jon and Abi dominate the first game 21-13 and then take a close second game 21-19 to secure the rubber point.

The second mixed doubles rubber saw Alan and Rachael confidently take the first game 21-13 but stutter in the middle of the second game before coming back to take it, and the rubber point, 21-19.

With the match won the third mixed doubles rubber took on a different meaning as, if it was won, BATs would be joint top of division two. There was then no pressure on Paul and Frankie as they took to the court.

The first game was won comfortably 21-16 but then the nerves began to appear. In the end the BATs pair took the game and the all important rubber point 21 – 18.

Whereas last season BATs found winning rubbers hard to come by they have begun this season in a positive frame of mind and for the second time they had won a match 6-3 to go joint top of division two.
