AN Okehampton volunteer has received a regional commendation in recognition of her support for local children.

Jay Kennett, aged 70, was recognised in the Marsh Trust Barnardo's Volunteer of the Year Awards.

She was praised for her work with the Okehampton Sure Start Children's Centre, which is managed by Barnardo's on behalf of Devon County Council.

Jay volunteers alternate weeks at the 'healthy child clinics' held at the parish church hall, supporting parents and playing with the children.

The award was presented in advance of national Make A Difference Day, which takes place on Saturday, October 27.

Jay was nominated by Barnardo's centre lead Chris Parsons

Chris said: 'Jay has been supporting the clinics since January 2010 and rarely misses a session.

'They are an important opportunity for local families with children under five to speak to public health and children's centre staff, seek advice and get their babies weighed.

'A cup of tea and chatting with other mums helps to increase their support networks and make new friends.

'Jay prepares the activities and refreshments and then spends most of the session playing with the older children or reading stories, as well as chatting to parents and signposting them to Barnardo's staff or health visitors.

Chris said Jay had shown shown 'real dedication' to the children's centre, and enjoyed her time with the families, who equally liked spending time with her.

'Jay is a valuable addition to our team and we are pleased that her dedication has been acknowledged by this award,' said Chris.

Jay thanked Chris for the nomination, and added: 'I hope it encourages more young mothers to come and feel happy at the children's centre.' 

Okehampton Sure Start Children's Centre opened five years ago to provide free support to parents and carers of under 5s.

Staff use local venues to offer a wide range of services, including young parents groups, breast feeding groups, baby massage, first aid courses, stay-and-play sessions, home visits, health clinics, ante-natal classes, and support for childminders.
