THE Tavonians Theatre Company will be celebrating William Shakespeare's 450th birthday with a very special evening at The Wharf, Tavistock this month, but rather differently from the original plan!
A visit by two members to the marvellous Shakespeare's Globe theatre in London, plus The Wharf's recent upgrade to digital projection of films, has sparked a completely new idea for the event.
There will now be a special showing of the 1944 film of Henry V, one of the finest Shakespeare films ever made, directed by and starring Laurence Olivier, on Wednesday April 23, as part of the Tavistock Festival.
With its rich and beautiful language, wide range of characters, rousing action, a classic score by William Walton and with its stunning colour photography now digitally restored, this film is a real treat.
The showing will begin at 7.30pm with a short introduction by the Tavonians. Before the screening, the Wharf bar will be open and there will be a display about William Shakespeare, the recreated Globe Theatre and past Tavonians' productions of some of his plays for the audience to look at.
Tickets are available from the Wharf box office on 01822 611166 at £5 for adults and £3 for students when pre-booked, or £6 and £3 if bought on the night.
