A SCHEME to decorate Tavistock with banners is to be pursued by town councillors ? despite a cool reception from planners.
Cllr Norma Woodcock at last week?s full council meeting enthusiastically backed the idea of vertical banners: ?I think the town looks wonderful when it?s dressed up.?
She said banners advertising specific events like the steam fair or carnival would look smarter than the horizontal banner strung up between the town hall and Court Gate, which looked a bit ?tatty? on its blue rope.
?It?s also extremely expensive in terms of manpower to put up.?
She said the vertical-style banners, similar to the one outside Tavistock Library, would look smart, hold well in the wind and be easily changed according to forthcoming events.
?I would like to suggest Guildhall car park would be a super place,? she said.
Cllr Jane Ramsey said: ?I think it?s a brilliant idea ? it must work out cheaper.?
Town clerk Roger Howard told the council that West Devon Borough Council?s senior planning officer was not enthusiastic about the idea of banners in the centre of Tavistock.
?He certainly doesn?t think we would get planning permission for any of them in such a delicate area as the centre of Tavistock,? he said.
But councillors asked Col Howard to make further enquiries, regarding costs of such banners, to be brought back to a future committee meeting.
