YOUNG cornet player Carl Woodason has been sounding the right note in a number of recent competitions.
Not content with picking up a second place in his class at a competition in Corsham, Wiltshire, Carl, who plays with Hatherleigh Silver Band, recorded a first place at the recent Wincanton band competition, and a fourth place at the ?hotbed? of local banding ? Indian Queens in Cornwall.
In a large class, 11-year-old Carl came away with fourth place. Joining Carl at the contest were Hannah Twose and Andrew Collier who, though not among the prize winners, played very well indeed and received glowing praise from their tutor Adrian Edwards.
Saturday, November 8, was a busy day for the band, leaving at 7.15am to travel to the Riviera Centre in Torquay to take part in the SWBBA annual contest, where they finished a very creditable third in their class.
Jim Reynolds, press officer for Hatherleigh Silver Band, said the band were first to play on the day which is always difficult.
?Our solo cornet player Greg Morgan was singled out for his excellent playing, but it was a good performance from all the players,? he said.
The band then headed back to Hatherleigh to take part in a memorable centenary carnival.
On the Sunday morning, the band took part in the Remembrance Day Parade to the Church.
After Christmas, the band is hoping to form a supporters? committee.
Mr Reynolds said it was hoped the new committee would come up with some fresh fundrasing ideas to help keep the band going and the name of Hatherleigh to the forefront.
The band has a very busy time ahead in December, including switching on the Christmas trees lights in Hatherleigh Square, on Monday, December 1, at 7.30pm and Christmas concerts in North Tawton and Hatherleigh.
