THE New Year is off to a great start for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) thanks to a festive fundraising ball held at the Moorland Garden Hotel near Yelverton.

A cheque for £880 was presented to Brigadier Simon Hill (Rtd), a former trustee of the RNRMC, raised from ticket proceeds, auction and raffle along with donations received at the Mistletoe Ball held in December.

Presenting the cheque, Andrew Jenkins, general manager from The Moorland Garden Hotel, said: 'Given the hotel's history and location such a short distance from Plymouth and 42 Commando Royal Marines at Bickleigh Barracks, we're committed to supporting the forces whenever we can.

'Thank you to everyone who came to support the event, and the businesses who donated a prize.'

Brigadier Simon Hill said: 'It's tremendous that the Moorland Garden Hotel and their customers have thought about marines and sailors who face unique pressures associated with service life. This money will make a real difference, thank you.'

Malcolm Pollock from the RNRMC said: 'I served in the Royal Navy for 30 years, and I have lived in the Tavistock area for much of that time. What the Moorland Garden Hotel has achieved here is quiet special and the money raised will make a real difference.'

The principal charity of the Royal Navy, the RNRMC was set up to improve the lives of all who serve, past and present, and their families.
