DARTMOOR Railway?s campaign to introduce a regular commuter service from Okehampton to Exeter was backed this week by a Liberal Democrat MEP and the man hoping to represent the party at Westminster following the next general election.

David Walker, the man recently chosen as Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Torridge and West Devon, visited Okehampton Station with Graham Watson, the Somerset-based South West MEP and leader of the Liberal group in the European parliament.

Mr Walter said Dartmoor Railway was one of the first organisations in the Okehampton area he wanted to visit after being chosen to succeed John Burnett MP.

?I am full of admiration for the hard work which local people have put into restoring the railway and making a daily consumer service a viable proposition.

?The service would make a great difference to all the people who live on the Okehampton to Exeter route,? he said.

Mr Watson added: ?The congestion which people face if they travel by car into Exeter is becoming steadily worse. Dartmoor Railway is offering a very attractive alternative. I am strongly in favour of this proposal.?
