SECOND world war military vehicles will be in Okehampton this weekend as the popular Dartmoor Military Heritage Weekend takes visitors on a journey into the past. Okehampton Battle Camp will host the large collection of wartime vehicles belonging to enthusiasts of the Military Vehicle Trust. As part of National Heritage Weekend, Okehampton Camp will be open free of charge to the public from 10am on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10. In addition to the second world war vehicles, re-enactors will demonstrate tactics and weaponry of the past 70 years. Peter Coker, Devon Military Vehicle Trust chairman said: ?Our members look forward to demonstrating our rare military vehicles against the background of a military camp built in 1893 and traditional military training area.? Members of the Prince of Wales Royal Regiment (Volunteers) and 37 Signals Regiment, attending their annual training on Dartmoor will demonstrate their modern equipment and describe their recent operational experiences. 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery will bring their guns into crash action as part of the arena display at 11.30am and 2.30pm each day. Youngsters from the Devon Cadet Forces will demonstrate on the fitness trail and the public will be able to join them on the laser rifle range. Other attractions include expert communicators attempting to link 1940s radios across the world, and model makers displaying and explaining their work. Military memorabilia will also be on display. For anyone who has something they would like to have identified, experts will be on hand to assist. There will be many other exhibits of interest to Dartmoor and military enthusiasts alike during the two-day event. Together with Dartmoor National Park Authority, there will be guided walks on the moor to visit military artifacts. Experts will provide detailed explanations of how Dartmoor has been used by the military and continues to contribute to the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces. Defence Estates officers and land agents will be available to describe how the Ministry of Defence cares for Dartmoor, the efforts that soldiers make to be considerate of other users and the studies being conducted to inform the case for re-negotiating the licences for the use of Dartmoor beyond 2012. The military has trained on Dartmoor for more than 200 years. more than half of those on Okehampton Camp, the first permanent training camp in the UK. Today many of the original buildings provide robust accommodation for the light armed forces, particularly the Royal Marines, honing their skills in preparation for operations throughout the world. Examples of stables and accommodation will be open to the public as part of Military Heritage Weekend. Dartmoor Railway will be providing a convenient service to Okehampton from Exeter on Sunday. There is free parking on the parade square and easy access for the less able. The NAAFI will be open to all for refreshments throughout the weekend.
