WHEN the Bere Alston open mixed fours invitation tournament started in the mid 90s the proud winners were a mixed team from Devonport Park and Plympton. Now those inaugural winners have repeated their victory by winning this year?s prestigious event. Twenty-eight teams from all over Devon and Cornwall took part under blistering sun and blue skies, but the team of Peter Stapleton (skip), John Small, Jan Stapleton and Margaret Small coped best with the heat to score a convincing victory, beating a Brixham team skipped by John Cherrington in the final. Third place was taken by Kensey Vale, Launceston, skipped by Mike Wilkins. Tavistock managed a victory over hosts Bere Alston, but neither side managed to progress far. After the presentation by club chairman Keith Whitting, the winning skip described the event as ?among the best in the West Country?. He added: ?This was actually our third victory in the tournament and we look forward to coming back to defend the trophy next year.? While Bere Alston failed to progress far in their own competition, a team of Keith and Sue Whitting and Ken Wood triumphed in the Topsham Invitation Triples, Exeter, attended by 24 teams from various parts of the West Country.
