DOMESTIC Violence Awareness Week features a thought provoking range of events across every district in Devon from Monday November 21. In West Devon, there will be posters, information packs in local businesses and promotional information on bus tickets and on the buses. The Devon Against Domestic Violence and Abuse organisation will also be asking for donations in return for its glow in the dark wristbands and white ribbons ? all profits will go to the women?s refuges in Devon. Families, friends, and supporters of the victims of domestic violence will gather in Exeter for the county launch on November 21 and will walk in silent witness to the city?s Bedford Square at noon. A stall will remain for the afternoon to promote the week of awareness raising and to encourage survivors to seek support and recovery. West Devon has its own outreach link to provide confidential help and advice for women affected by domestic violence. The project was set up just over four years ago through funding secured by the Safer West Devon Community Safety Partnership. Last month, volunteers at the outreach received almost 100 calls to its helpline 01837 55228. Janice Goodwin, project worker for the West Devon Women?s Aid Group said the number of calls increases by the year. She said: ?During our first year of operation we received 178 calls for the entire 12 months. Now we can expect to get as many calls as that in a two-month period.? The group runs a 14-week course called Pattern Changing, which is specifically aimed at women who have experienced domestic abuse. Information about the course and the planned activities for the week are available by contacting the outreach helpline.
