THE award of a top prize of a 'state of the art' computer package with Internet access will benefit sailing clubs, schools, anglers and visitors to the Roadford Lake Watersports Centre.
South West Lakes Trust won the prize as part of BT's Community Connections awards. Head of watersports, James Platt, said they were delighted to have won the package and it would be of tremendous help to the local community.
'We will be discussing with the schools and sailing club the best way each can get maximum benefit.
For example, those considering taking up an outdoor sport can use the Internet for up-to-date information on weather, safety, training opportunities and courses,' he said.
It could also be used to follow ocean racers.
The computer at Roadford Watersports Centre will be accessible to all and young people will also be encouraged to take up angling, obtaining information from websites.
Julia Moysey, the trust's head of development, said promoting sailing and fishing would 'help regenerate our community after a very difficult year for local businesses'.
'This remote, rural area — which is 70 per cent dependent on low farming incomes and with little public transport — needs wider opportunities available locally.
The Internet is an ideal way of bringing broader knowledge to the community and the trust is delighted to be able to play its part,' she said.
