OKEHAMPTON College has become one of only three secondary schools in the county to be awarded the Devon Inclusion Award for Dyslexia. Senior education psychologist for Devon County Council Jenny Bates presented principal Darryl Chapman and assistant principal Chris Field with the award at an assembly on Wednesday June 22. The school had been chosen to work towards the award as part of a pilot programme, because of the pro-active approach it already had to dyslexia. Now that commitment has been officially recognised, with the college attracting particular praise for its communication with the parents of dyslexic children, for its liaison with feeder schools which might have dyslexic pupils, and for identifying and supporting dyslexic students within the college. Chris Field said the college was delighted with its achievement, and wished to particularly praise higher level teaching assistant Julie James, who was central to the college?s success in gaining the award.
