AN OKEHAMPTON childminder who recently became fully accredited has received an award for her success in training to further her skills. Karen Mallet, who has more than 13 years? experience as a childminder, received an award at the event held in Exeter and sponsored by zero14plus last month. The awards recongnised people across the South West who had successfully trained in many different areas of childcare provision for the under-8s. Karen said it had taken ?lots and lots of training? and regular assessment visits to achieve her current status. The accreditation process took 12 months and means Karen can take Government childcare vouchers. Karen initially worked in a bank after leaving school, but soon decided she wanted to work with children. ?I love children and like to treat them as respectfully as possible. The training I have means I am able to teach them early learning skills, but it is important to do it in a fun way. Children learn through playing and enjoyment, ? she said. Karen currently has 14 children whom she looks after throughout the week, the youngest has just turned 12 months old and the oldest is eleven years old. Karen is also a member of a group of Okehampton childminders who meet to support each other and help those who are new to looking after youngsters. The friendly group regularly gets together and discusses particular issues relevant to their profession. The next meeting is due to take place on May 16.
