A PRESTIGIOUS engineering award has been presented to a Tavistock student.
Timothy Houghton, formerly of Tavistock College, has won an Institution of Mechanical Engineering (IMechE) Undergraduate Scholarship.
Timothy is due to commence studying at Cambridge University this autumn. His ambition to study engineering was confirmed through his 'Year in Industry' placement. Working at Cemtrax Ltd, in its gas turbine division, Timothy learnt some from very useful and transferable skills.
Timothy has always enjoyed building and mechanics, his other achievements include National Sailing Schools champion and youth champion for Lazer 3000.
Timothy was awarded his prize of £2,000 by Anya Sitaram, the presenter of BBC1's Tomorrow's World and ITN News, at the Institution's Westminster Headquarters on Tuesday, October 16.
The winner receives his scholarship in instalments throughout the course of their undergraduate degree. Assisting Anya in presenting the award was Sir Michael Moore, IMechE director general, and John McDougall, IMechE deputy president.
'The IMechE is dedicated to encouraging students who are committed to the challenging subject of mechanical engineering.
'The winner of this award is one of the highest A-level achievers in science and engineering subjects across the UK and, with the support of the IMechE, will hopefully be one of the leading mechanical engineers of the future,' said Mr McDougall.
