TAVISTOCK town councillors have made a commitment to provide a replacement bridge or crossing over the river in the Meadows following consultations with other parties who might wish to be involved in the project.
The iron bridge has been a crossing point for residents and pedestrians since 1904 but is in a bad state of repair.
Although modifications carried out earlier this year have made the bridge stable, experts advised that it was only safe for another two years.
At a meeting of Tavistock Town Council Cllr Betty Batchelor said there had been much discussion about the bridge but no assurance it would be replaced.
Research revealed it would cost in the region of £80,000 to £100,000.
Cllr Ian Andrews said other parties might wish to be involved in the project and that was why no firm commitment had been made by the council.
West Devon Borough Council is interested because of its desire to improve access to the Riverside Car Park but would like the bridge or crossing further upstream.
?We are thinking about a bridge that serves both purposes ? there needs to be an ongoing liaison between us and the borough council in terms of practicality and finance,? said Cllr Norma Woodcock.
Cllr Ted Sherrell said if the borough and the town council both spent six-figure sums on bridges within a stone?s throw of each other, the Tavistock taxpayers would not be very happy.
It was agreed that a crossing of some sort would be provided after consultation with other authorities but councillors stressed that the location of the bridge should not be too far upstream or it would be no use to the residents living on the other side of the river.
