A COLLECTION of antiques belonging to a former mayor of Tavistock comes up for public auction today (Thursday).
Going under the hammer at 11am at Eldred's antiques sale in Belliver Way, Roborough, are numerous items that originally belonged to the late Robin Fenner, a Tavistock auctioneer, who served as mayor of the town from 1984 to 1985.
Among the items of Tavistock interest is a 19th century small turret bell, moulded for J Abrahams, Tavistock 1811, which was probably hung in a local house or stable turret. It carries an estimate of £100 to £200.
Also from Tavistock is a baluster-shaped stoneware spirit flagon, impressed for the town's White and Skinner spirit merchants. It is stoppered and appears to contain its original contents and is estimated at £50 to £80.
An early-18th century walnut feather-banded chest of two short and three long graduated drawers, on bracket feet is expected to reach £500 to £700.
A collection of mainly mid-20th century Middle Eastern and oriental rugs, including a Kashan design expected to raise between £300 and £500 and a Persian Shiraz £200 to £300.
An 18th century slate wall-mounted sundial scratch-decorated with figures, stars, sun and moon is estimated to go for £80 to £120.
There is also a large section of ceramics and of particular interest is an early Moorcroft baluster vase in the Hazeldene pattern. Marked for Liberty and Co the vase carries an estimate of £300 to £400.
