A VILLAGE arts and craft exhibition, which has risen from humble beginnings to raise thousands of pounds for charity and become an important Cornish community event, takes place for the fourth time this month.

Three previous exhibitions at Upton Cross Parish Hall, near Liskeard, has done more than £18,000 of business for local artists and raised more than £2,000 for the local primary school as well as being visited by thousands of people.

Now artist Ruth Carthew, who created the event and has organised it each year, is finalising this year's exhibition. It opens at 2pm on August 16 and then runs daily from 10am-6pm until August 28.

Ruth, who lives in Upton Cross, said: 'I began this exhibition in 1999 to give local people a chance to show their work, and to create something which involved everybody from schoolchildren to well-known artists.

'Each year it has been so successful that I've had no choice but to plan another one. And each year has been more successful than the year before.'

All profits from the event are donated to Upon Cross School.
