A SITE is needed to provide the backdrop for an ambitious project to create a giant maze on the edge of Dartmoor.
Huge support is gathering for the one acre circular maze, designed by local artist Yvette Martin, which would be made from a mile of stone walling.
Originally earmarked for Dartmoor, Dartmoor National Park, although supportive, has advised that the nature and scale of the project would compromise the conservation of the park itself and so alternative sites are being investigated.
Yvette, who started work on the idea two years ago, said she was looking for a site of about five acres of open flattish rough land with good access in the Okehampton or Chagford areas.
?Although we cannot use the moor we would like it to be in the background because it would enhance the project,? said Yvette. ?It?s a perfect opportunity for farmers who want to diversify, especially given the situation following foot and mouth.?
In the last two years Yvette has been working behind the scenes to gauge support and work up her plans.
To this end she has formed an enthusiastic steering group full of influential and experienced individuals, drawn up a 25-page business plan for funders and landowners, completed an NVQ in starting up a social enterprise plus other courses and taken her exhibition on tour.
She has also managed to raise half of the £2,000 needed for the first stage of the project, including obtaining planning permission.
Wherever the artist goes she receives support for the scheme: ?We have had more than 150 signed questionnaires and comments backing the idea,? she said. ?People believe this maze could boost the economy and give back their pride and enthusiasm for the area.
?It complies with everything in the Devon Recovery Plan including green tourism, regeneration of communities and promoting the Devon brand.?
It is hoped the project, estimated to cost around £700,000, will develop into a major tourist attraction providing an outdoor venue for the performing arts, music and theatre events. Future plans include a visitors? centre which could house music concerts, exhibitions and small conferences.
The Royal College of Art trained environmental artist has secured a grant from Exeter-based charity Community Champions which supports individuals in regeneration projects and she is feeling very positive about the financial future of the project.
?We have a good feeling about this ? all the ground work has been done and now it is a case of finding the site,? said Yvette.
The maze project exhibition will be held in the Courtyard Cafe in Chagford until November 4.
