A WALL-hanging made by Bondleigh artist Gisela Banbury following the foot and mouth crisis two years ago is among works featured in a Christmas exhibition hosted by Hatherleigh's Salar Gallery.

The exhibition, 'Devon, Glorious Devon', takes its name from Gisela's wall hanging in appliqué and machine embroidery, which the artist undertook during the crisis when her farm was quarantined for three months.

'After the slaughter,' she says, 'the countryside was quiet, gates stood wide open, the fields empty, probably for the first time since they were created. This wall hanging celebrates Devon becoming glorious Devon again.'

The exhibits' patchwork of fields are filled with many and various animals.

Some of Gisela's more recent projects are also on display, including kneeler designs for Iddesleigh Church which were taken from the roof bosses of the church, and worked by members of the congregation. There are also designs for Blundell's School chapel kneelers which are being made by members and friends past and present to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the school next year.

Among other artists featured are Maryjane Carruthers, who exhibits earthenware and stoneware pottery, and James Kendrew, whose hand-forged ironwork includes grate, firedogs and tools, all with his intricate ram's head-handles, gate and candlesticks. Exhibits in wood include the turnery of Chris Walker from Launceston and Colin Burlton from Bow, who carves birds and wild animals.

Northlew artist Jo Seccombe crowns the show with her delightful animal sculptures in cold cast bronze resin including one of 'Wizzle (a terrier) rolling' and others of a Devon cow and a horse. Also exhibiting is Jean Buchanan who creates horse sculptures.

The exhibition is at the Salar Gallery until December 24. For further details ring 01837 810940.
