Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East

Alphington 2

Okehampton Argyle 3

OKEHAMPTON ran this match for 50 minutes and built up a healthy lead but a spirited comeback by the Alphas saw Argyle hanging on for all three points at the end.

Argyle were without influential midfielder Rob Clarke and had regulars Chris Wills and Ricky Wooldridge out injured.

The game was a great advertisement for the Peninsula League with both teams playing good open attacking football and early on it was very even with play swinging from end to end.

In the 27th minute, a fluent Okehampton passing movement started by defender Corey Burns was finished by the same player with a superb shot from 30 yards which gave the Alphington keeper no chance.

A few minutes later, the same player nearly doubled the lead when a similar move saw him shoot just wide from inside the box.

Argyle began to dominate the game in the 10 minutes before half-time and increased their lead when awarded a free kick just inside the Alphington half. Captain James Williams spotted the home keeper too far forward and blasted the free kick straight over his head and into the net.

Three minutes into the second half when Argyle extended their lead.

A corner on the right fell to Luke Alden on the edge of the box and the outstanding Argyle midfielder played a square ball wide to Steve Madge, whose floated cross was headed home by Matt Mortimer.

Shortly after Alden who had been Okehampton's best player and was running midfield, had to be replaced as a result of an injury.

Argyle brought on Steve Williams in a midfield position and he gave his usual 100% effort but it was from this point onwards that Okehampton began to fall apart in the middle of the park with Alphington making inroads on the right flank.

On 64 minutes, Shaun Lyne-Leys reduced the arrears with a header from close in and then Peter Darke scored with another header on 82 minutes.

Argyle now had their backs to the wall and it took a great save from keeper Harry Geering and some tremendous goal-line clearances to ensure they came away with all three points.
