THE current arguments over matched funds for Objective One for Cornwall are counter productive and damaging. They are seriously undermining business confidence in the programme, confidence that is vital if we are to see assistance in the form of private investment.
The Federation of Small Businesses represents small business in the partnership bidding for the fund and it is clear everyone wants to see the maximum benefit from the programme.
We should be working together to pull as much cash into it as possible.
Time and effort is being wasted in recriminations instead of finding a way forward.
Arguments over government funding levels are drawing attention away from other vital issues such as the delivery mechanisms that will allow businesses to benefit from the programme.
The opportunity which Objective One gives us is enormous and businesses should not be disillusioned by the current public arguments. If more money is allocated to small business financial support, dynamic management is applied and the Government plays its part, then there is no reason why Cornwall cannot emulate Ireland's success.
Ultimately there will be Objective One money available and we must gather as much UK public and private funding as possible to match that from Europe.
It is very disappointing that our Government is not forthcoming with the help that we need. We fully support those who are fighting that corner but care must be taken not to dilute enthusiasm in the business sector.
