A MATURE tortoise was found wandering in the Mill Hill area of Tavistock on Sunday, July 2.

Fortunately the tortoise is being cared for by a local couple who are experienced in the care of these animals. They would love to reunite the tortoise with its owner who they believe must be worried for its safety.

One of the carers, who would prefer not to be named, said: ‘It was a hot day and the tortoise was walking down the road at speed. It is in good health and apart from being a bit stressed and hot, it quickly recovered after some shade and tasty kale salad.’ 

Sadly the tortoise was not microchipped, but registered as ‘found’ with the local vets and Margaret Green Animal Rescue and on Facebook and the couple are hoping for a happy ending.

Tortoises are fearless and adventurous and notoriously good at escaping, (many can climb very well, and burrow under anything but the strongest enclosure) and can end up in perilous situations.
