THE idea of naming the proposed new bridge over the Walkham after Brunel, a man who was famous for building his own bridges more than one hundred years ago seems rather odd to me (Letters, January 7). Why not name the bridge after the (presumably living) person who designed it?
A meeting about the proposed bridge was held at the village hall in Horrabridge some years ago and visitors were asked for a suitable name for the new construction. I asked who designed the bridge and was told it was a Mr Wyatt. Assuming I was given the right information, it seems entirely appropriate to me to use his name for the bridge.
