HELPING to maintain the community orchard was the aim of St Andrew's Primary School's annual Apple Day recently, which successfully raised more than £350 for the cause.

People visited the school in Buckland Monachorum to take part in a wealth of apple-related activities.

Year 4 pupil Elizabeth won the apple pie competition for the second year running, judged by top chef Peter Gorton and Celia Steven, and prizes were also awarded to Esme (Year 4) and Daisy (Year 6) for their apple product label designs. Year 4 pupil Darcy was commended for her poster design for the Community Orchard products.

The Tamar Apple Press proved popular, with many members of the wider community taking along their own apples and collecting the fresh juice.

Pupils made cakes, bread and chutney to sell at the event and bottles of pasteurised apple juice were also available. This formed part of the entrepreneurial activities the school has been developing as part of its Comenius School Partnership project, 'WinDoors to Europe', in conjunction with schools in Okehampton, Italy and Germany.
