CHILDREN from Halwill School recently had a day?s outing with a difference at Roadford Lake.
Rather than a day focusing on the lake pupils spent the day at an old apple orchard belonging to a farm at West Wortha that was deserted before the building of Roadford Dam.
The children helped to plant cider and dessert apple trees amongst the few surviving trees from the original orchard along with their head-teacher Mr David Jones and some school helpers.
Firstly they helped to make the tree guards to prevent browsing deer and sheep from damaging the new plants.
After the planting, the school group mapped the new and existing trees to make a record of the species so when the labels deteriorate South West Lakes Trust will still be able to identify them.
In addition to the tree planting the children were also taken on an awareness-raising walk to discover more about the wildlife of the area ? and see how important our senses are when it comes to interpreting our surroundings.
They then went on to make treasure maps and ?aged? them, resulting in them taking home some almost unreadable maps that even the most avid treasure hunter would have difficulty using . . .
