THE fundraising appeal to send a group of Okehampton youngsters to South Africa to carry out their Duke of Edinburgh award got off to a flying start on Saturday. Participants, parents and helpers held their first coffee morning at The Inspiration Centre and raised £200 towards the trip next summer. Around 12 young people from the Okehampton Award Challenge Centre and Okehampton College will be embarking on the once in a lifetime challenge and experiencing the amazing differences in lifestyle and culture. There are plans to hold regular coffee mornings and sales over the next year. Award leader in Okehampton Chris Bourne said: ?It?s great to see these young people so engaged in worthwhile pursuits. Not only will they have a great time but will learn things about themselves and other people in a way that will make a lasting impression for their good. ?They are all great youngsters and it?s a privilege to be able to help make this happen for them.? Among those attending was mayor of Okehampton Tony Leech.
