FIRE brigades all over Dartmoor are appealing for the help of the public to prevent unnecessary callouts during the swaling season.

A few days of fine weather at this time of year means the gorse burning season on the moor is due.

Farmers burning gorse have to notify the fire authorities before they set their fires and they are only allowed to burn between dawn and dusk.

Brett Johnson, of Princetown fire brigade, said he did not want to discourage people from reporting fires, but asked that they give an accurate location, preferably with a grid reference, and that they remain where they are for the few minutes until the engines arrive.

He said that would save time chasing about unnecessarily, especially if there were other calls that needed more urgent attention.
