AN APPEAL to recruit more foster carers in the West Devon area has been launched by a private foster care agency, which has opened a new office in Okehampton.

Following Foster Care Fortnight 2004, which aimed to publicise the shortage of carers nationwide, there is still a need for new carers in this area.

On any one day in Britain, there are approximately 50,000 children and young people living in foster care, yet there remains a shortage of carers. It is estimated another 8,000 are needed just to keep pace with demand.

South West Placements, an established private foster care agency, recently opened a new office in Rosemary House, Market Street, Okehampton, and manager David Hutchinson is keen to spread the message of the need for new carers.

?We live in a beautiful part of the country and I am sure there are hundreds of caring people out there who have the time, space and commitment to provide marvellous homes for our young people,? he said.

Many people assume that fostering was only taken on by married couples, but that was a myth, said Mr Hutchinson.

?Anyone can apply to be a foster carer as long as they have what it takes to care for children separated from their own families.?

There are no age limits ? so long as the person can demonstrate a mature, responsible attitude and enough energy for the task.

?Single people are definitely needed as well as married or co-habiting couples. In England and Wales, increasingly more gay men and lesbians are fostering.

Anyone interested in finding out more about foster care is invited to call into South West Placements? new office in Market Street or telephone 01837 55674.

?We are very friendly and anyone is welcome to drop in and see us for a chat and a cup of tea,? Mr Hutchinson added.
