AN Okehampton man is making a last-ditch appeal for the return of a large amount of money he lost off the back of his motorcycle earlier this week.

Cliff Mennell, a pallet dealer, had withdrawn a large amount of cash to replenish his stock — depleted during the foot and mouth crisis.

He was riding back to his home from Lydford with the bag of £20 notes strapped to the luggage rack of his bike late on Tuesday night.

Somewhere between the village and the town the bag worked its way loose and, although he retraced his steps that night and again on Wednesday morning, Mr Mennell failed to find any trace of the bag or the money.

'I would think by now if anybody had found it they would have handed it in, but I'm still hopeful somebody will be honest enough to hand it in and I'm offering a reward for its return,' he said.

DC Dave Elliot, investigating the loss, said: 'If anyone comes across this bag or a large amount of cash, or has any other information at all, please contact the police.'

Tavistock police station can be contacted on 08705 777444.
