THE phenomenal luck that Okehampton members of the Hospiscare Lottery have enjoyed has struck again.

Margaret Wallis, who purchased her ticket at the Hospiscare shop in Okehampton's Arcade, has become the eighth £1,000 winner since the first draw at the end of May last year. In all, Okehampton has won prizes to a total value of over £10,000.

The Hospiscare lottery has over 4,000 players, ten per cent of whom are in the Okehampton area. The income this generates is a real help to the charity which provides support for people with life threatening illnesses and their families.

Hospiscare Lottery manager Michael Goodwin said: 'The people of Okehampton have really taken this fundraising to heart, knowing, I am sure, that each contribution of a pound per week, helps to add to a really grand total.

'But as for the Okehampton luck, I just cannot explain it. I suppose a clever statistics expert would have a mathematical explanation for the anomaly but I believe there is such a thing as luck.'

The charity's shop manager Viv Meaker and the lottery manager played host to the £1,000 winners who enjoyed a special cake and of course, a nice cup of tea during a celebration last week.

Hospiscare is looking to increase the number of lottery players to 6,000 by the end of the year.
