ORIGINALLY an Okehampton girl from a farming background the current foot and mouth crisis deeply saddens me.

Outrageous and unnecessary are but a few of the many words I could use to express my anger over the mass slaughter perceived necessary to eradicate the spread of foot and mouth disease by the Government in its latest announcement.

It sickens me that there is a vaccine for the disease but it is chosen not to be used because in doing so we forego our foot and mouth-free country label. What happens if in a couple of years there is another outbreak? Another mass cull?

I think the farmers need to make a stand. After all does the Government want to be responsible for destroying not only the innocent animals but also the lives of farmers and their families? I truly believe that a number will not restock their herds so do we kiss goodbye to British farming? Another age-old industry down the pan!
