WEST Devon Borough Council's planning committee has delayed the go-ahead for two major housing plans in Okehampton until it sees detailed designs of the estates.

Cllr Noel Cartwright was angry that no designs had been displayed at the committee's meeting last Tuesday relating to the 75 houses planned for land at Upcott and the 58 off Exeter Road.

Both applications have previously been granted outline planning permission — the site at Upcott was first approved in 1989.

But permission is now being sought for reserved matters which relates to the design, layout and access to the housing sites. Planning officers have recommended approval.

Speaking on the first application for 75 detached dwellings off Glendale Road, Upcott, by Redrow Homes Ltd, Cllr Cartwright said: 'I feel we should have a proper presentation of the architect's designs for the whole estate.

'This is a major development in our major town. If we do not get this right at the start we could end up with the 'little boxes' people are always complaining about.'

It was agreed to defer the applications so members had a chance to look in depth at the plans and attend site meetings at the two locations.
