JEFFREY Archer or John Grisham would be hard pressed to come up with a more bizarre plot than that which has transpired at Westminster lately. Truth is indeed 'stranger than fiction'.
What we are seeing is the result of the climate of greed that has invaded our society, where the name of the game is to get something for nothing. I suppose when you compare an MP's basic salary with say a footballer's, you can understand, but not condone, the desire to supplement it. The difference is, of course, that in the case of footballers, the taxpayer is not affected.
This greed has pervaded all levels of society. Closer to home we have the company responsible for enforcing the parking fines at the Leg O'Mutton and St Paul's Church car parks.
The result of this sort of action will be that people will not recycle their waste and will stop using the park. What a shame, all the more so because the land for the park was originally donated by Maristow Estates, who are now responsible for charging for parking at the above sites.
I would have thought that it would make more sense to install an honesty box in these car parks, as they have at Princetown and Postbridge. These would probably produce more income than the present system, without the ill feeling that exists at the moment.
