AN environmental film on climate change is being screened in Tavistock this Sunday (December 9). Westden has chosen to screen the ?Hawai?i ? Message in the Waves? film, from the BBC Natural History Unit, to inform West Devon residents of the environmental challenges facing people and wildlife of the Hawaiian Islands. The event has been organised by the environmental charity to coincide with the National Climate March Global Day of Action in London this Saturday (December 8). The 40-minute film will be shown at Café Liaison in Tavistock at 11.30am, 12.30pm and 1.30pm. The producers of the film have learned that Hawai?i requires immediate attention due to global plastic pollution, so in order to provide more information on the situation, the website http://www.messageinthewaves.com">www.messageinthewaves.com was created. Around four-fifths of marine trash comes from land, swept by wind or washed by rain off highways and city streets, down streams and rivers, and out to sea. Almost 90% of floating marine litter is plastic. The film reflects this issue and explains what can be done to stop this continuing. At the event, Westden will have information available on other aspects of combating climate change, including solar power and wind power generation for houses, composting, the use of shopping bags, sharing cars, and even ideas for Christmas presents ? encouraging people that any kind of recycling is saving energy. Rebecca Hosking, camerawoman and producer of the film, lives on Dartmoor and it was because of her initiative that Modbury became plastic bag-free. Westden is currently working with Tavistock Chamber of Commerce to promote the town as a ?plastic bag-free town?. Café Liaison will be serving Sunday Brunch from 11am to 3pm For more information contact Geri Laithwaite at Westden on 01822 617457.
