YELVERTON-based band, The Normals, will be playing alongside critically acclaimed group Auction For The Promise Club during the 'Electric Eclectic Collective' gig at The Wharf, Tavistock, this Saturday.
The Normals consists of members David Gray, James Hills, Daryl Warren, and Chris Spreadbury, who have been friends for about eight years and began by playing cover songs in their local pub.
For the past year they have been writing their own original songs, and describe their sound as being difficult to label, a mixture of 'folk, rock, ska and reggae'.
Although they consider their music to be ultimately unique, with a trombone as the lead instrument, The Normals have been influenced by a wide variety of musicians including Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and modern groups such as Kings of Leon.
The band acquired its name at the Beautiful Days concert, where lead singer James Hills was so perplexed by the vast range of ciders available that he asked the bar staff for 'one normal', hoping they would understand his request.
David Gray, a classically-trained musician who works as a music teacher, added: 'We're also just normal blokes with normal jobs.'
While not about to give up their regular jobs, The Normals have already received a great response from the public and have many gigs booked throughout the rest of the year.
Earlier this summer, the band played at the Tavistock Summer Solstice Festival, and at the South Devon Festival in Newton Abbot, where they received many compliments on the originality of their music.
The Normals have a demo CD available, and hope to record an official EP later this year, containing five or six tracks.
'The Electric Eclectic Collective' also features female-fronted band Auction For The Promise Club, from St Agnes, Cornwall, who recently recorded their debut EP at Abbey Road Studios. Listed in the Marie Claire UK Playlist alongside Mercury Prize nominee Florence and the Machine, and introduced on BBC 6 Music by Tom Robinson, the female-fronted indie rock band have garnered critical acclaim for their unique sound.
Other performers will include Joe James from Tavistock, Anything But The Blues from Plymouth, and Jamo, who will be debuting a small selection of his own songs.
