TWO friends from Tavistock are gearing up to embark on the 'greatest motoring adventure on the planet' — all for charity.

Chloe Brockington, 27 and Joe Goode, 35, will travel through approximately 20 countries and thunder across 10,000 miles of desert through Europe and Asia in a small, second hand vehicle completely on their own with no back up, no support and no set route.

The lack of rules and lack of assistance was the main reason the 'Mongol Rally' appealed to Chloe — a daredevil traveller in her own right!

'We like the fact that there is only one rule which is the challenge must be completed in a car under 1.2 litres and that we get to organise the route, it is not organised for us,' said Chloe.

'I've known about the rally for years but never had anyone to go with and no-one who knew about cars.

'Joe is a former mechanic and was up for the challenge — it's an awesome adventure that sounds like fun, we can't wait!'

Other than the rule of having to travel in a car with an engine smaller than 1.2 litres, one of the targets of the rally is to cross deserts and mountains to get to the finish line in Mongolia within six weeks.

The Mongol Rally website states: 'It's about getting lost, using your long neglected wits, raising shedloads of cash for charity and scraping into the finish line with your vehicle in tatters and a wild grin smeared across your grubby face.'

Chloe and Joe aim to live up to the 'motto' but instead of 'scraping' in to the finish line, the couple actually want to make it in one piece in a car that is stable — not one that started the race already in tatters!

'We have decided that we want to get to Mongolia, not just attempt and make it half way,' said Chloe.

'We aimed to take a car that is less than 15 years old — not too old — but DRB Car Sales have donated a VW Polo for us to use and are MOTing it for us and placing new parts on the car.'

Now the car has been sorted, the next thing on their list is to raise a minimum of £1,500 for their chosen causes — mental health charities Rethink and Scope.

The pair have to also raise at least £500 for Cool Earth, which is a charity chosen by the rally organisers.

Sponsorship for visas, petrol and money to cover all costs incurred along the trip will be from business sponsorship.

The cost of the rally may be high but it is the experience and what and who they meet along the way which is the driving force behind their determination.

Chloe said: 'Our goal is to get to Mongolia any way possible. There is about a 70 to 80 per cent success rate of getting there and there are usually 200 teams a year leaving from London.

'To us it's all about getting there and having an adventure along the way.

'It should take four weeks to drive to Mongolia and it will see us drive around 10,000 miles through three deserts and five mountain ranges.

'It is supposed to be difficult and it will just be me and Joe, but we can go anywhere we want as long as we organise it ourselves and get to the final destination.

'It's going to be gruelling but at the same time it will be incredible. We are aiming to complete it in five weeks.'

Joe added: 'It's a charity mission that's going to push us to our very limits, both physically and mentally.

'I would like to thank all of our sponsors for helping us facilitate this mission and of course all that have donated to our nominated charities.'

The pair leave for Mongolia on July 19.
