YEAR 7 students from Callington Community College headed off to Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre for a residential with their tutors recently. The residential experience is part of the transition programme at Callington College. The aim of the week is for students to know their tutor and each other through a range of interesting and challenging activities. The overarching theme was 'active and healthy lifestyles' with four main activities taking place. A walk along the coastal path to the historical harbour village of Charlestown saw the students combine an understanding of history with numeracy and drama challenges. During the watersports, including canoeing, body boarding and kayaking, many groups were lucky enough to see seals as they paddled around the bay and they took part in a number of beach activities such as rock pooling and sand sculpture. In the evenings the college staff organised activities, including rocket making and launching, team building and a quiz. The Porthpean trip was also supported by Year 11 Outdoor Education BTEC leaders. Each leader adopted a tutor group, encouraging, supporting and organising activities at the campsite. The students were excellent role models for the youngsters.
