HATHERLEIGH is due to host the Alternative International Chess Congress this Saturday ? and pubs in the area are being invited to submit teams for the big event. The challenge originates from 1992 when a chess match took place between The Red Lion at Exbourne and The Devonshire Inn at Sticklepath ? the winner being presented with a cup by the governor of Dartmoor Prison. This year?s challenge takes place at The Market Square, Hatherleigh, when teams of four should register to enter at 1.30pm. Entry costs £1 per person ? play will take place between 2pm and 5pm. The event is being sponsored by Devon Direct Insurance Services in conjunction with Austin signs. For more information, call Barry Coward on 01837 810747.
