A SOLID oak altar paid for by Polish servicemen who attended the former Roman Catholic Church at Gunnislake was installed at Tavistock on Remembrance Sunday.

A British and a Polish second world war veteran attended the service at Tavistock's Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Mary Magdalene.

The newly carved altar came from St Joseph's in Gunnislake and had to be put in place at Tavistock by six people.

Both the British and the Polish veterans said a few words at the end of the service and each carried a Union Flag to the altar.

A plaque was placed on the altar with words that commemorate the Navy, Army and Air Force and Polish Army allies, along with the names of all the veterans who died during the second world war.
