TAVISTOCK pupil Harry Nicholls, 5, was the winner in the 4/6 age group of the Devon and Cornwall Police's 2002 'Designs of the Future' competition with his design for a bus that went underwater.

Harry, who attends St Rumon's School, received two complimentary tickets to visit the Devon County Show — where the winning entries, runners-up and other designs were on display in the police marquee. As a prize he chose a day working with police dogs.

Another local winner was 10-year-old Matthew Longman from Tavistock Primary School with his design for a futuristic 999 mobile response vehicle, complete with rocket boosters. He won the 7/11 age group. His choice of prize was a ride in a police helicopter.

A spokesperson for the police said they were 'overwhelmed by the amount and the high quality of entries submitted'.

'The imagination and creativity of the hundreds of entries were fantastic,' she said.
